LEA BERTUCCI - LIGHT SILENCE, DARK SPEECH 7"
Physical vinyl available through I Dischi Del Barone www.iddb.se/003.html
Lea Bertucci's debut album Resonance Shapes LP from 2013 is an overlooked gem that caused a small stir at the IDDB office. On this much more stripped down affair the New York-based artist changed her bass clarinet for an old alto sax and the two cuts delivered here are somewhat different, but just as intimate and perplexing. 10 mesmerizing minutes that owes just as much to free jazz skronk
as it does to contemporary sound art.

"Light Silence, Dark Speech was recorded in fall of 2014 at Future-Past Studios, an acoustically perfect church hall in upstate New York. The primary instrument featured in the recording is an extremely old and out of tune alto sax from the 1920's. The instrument was given to me by a friend after sitting in storage for approximately 30 years. I consider the imperfections and limitations of the instrument's sound as a sort of preparation - a way to transcend the traditional genre music usually made with the saxophone - and open up the instrument to more abstract, textural sonic possibilities. The limitation of the format of the 7-inch was also an interesting challenge, as my pieces usually tend to be on the longer side, so having about a four minute time limit forced me to work within that specific constraint. For example, the B-side contains a piece in which I used in-studio processing via a stereo plate reverb to shape the sounds. The track begins totally dry, with no processing, but by the end is completely awash in resonant echo." - Lea Bertucci
